As we get older, our bodies change. You might see new lines on your face or notice that your joints ache more than they used to. You may also notice that your breasts are a different size or shape than they were when you were younger.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding bring more changes to your breasts. Breasts grow larger, and your nipples increase in size and may get darker in color. The duct system starts producing milk for your newborn baby. These changes can cause stretch marks in your skin that remain on your breasts for the rest of your life.
Shape. The estrogen-related changes that make breasts shrink can lead to your breasts sagging as well. When breast tissue weakens, the skin stretches, and gravity pulls them downward. You may notice these changes increase the space between breasts as well.
Lumps. Older breasts may be more prone to lumps or bumps. Most of the time, the lumps are harmless cysts, but you should call your doctor to discuss any new lumps in your breasts. These lumps can be a sign of cancer.
Not all breast changes are part of the aging process. Some changes can be symptoms of health problems, including breast cancer. You should call your doctor if you notice any of the following changes to your breasts:
You may not like the way your breasts look as you get older. You can help make your breasts look better under your clothes by getting supportive bras. Some stores have staff who can help you with fitting and get the right bra for your body.
If you want a permanent option, you can talk to a plastic surgeon about a breast lift or breast implants. Both of these operations will change the size, firmness, and position of your breasts. Breast lifts and breast implants are surgeries. They come with a variety of risks, so tell your doctor about your overall health before deciding on either operation.
Many women may notice that their breasts become larger just before a week of menses, whereas others may not experience such symptoms. Breast swelling and tenderness occur due to a surge in hormones during the menstrual cycle. The estrogen that your body makes in the initial period of the menstrual cycle peaks just before the mid-cycle. As a result, the breast duct grows. The progesterone level peaks near the 21st day of a 28-day cycle. This results in the growth of the milk glands of the breast. Breast swelling may also be associated with
When a young woman hits puberty, the first noticeable signs of breast development begin. When the ovaries start to make and release estrogen, fat in the connective tissue starts to collect. As a result, the breasts enlarge and the duct system also starts to grow. The female breast developmental stages are described below.
Some women with fibrocystic breasts have mile breast tenderness or pain. Other women with the condition may have very painful and tender breasts with lumpy areas that can be felt. Fibrocystic breast condition is most common in women after age 30, which continues through perimenopause and menopause. Women with the condition often have fewer problems after menopause (postmenopause).
Fibrocystic breast condition that involves hyperplasia is associated with a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer. Atypical hyperplasia is associated with a moderately increased risk of developing breast cancer compared to women with fibrocystic without fibrocystic changes. Natural and home remedies to help relieve breast pain include NSAIDs like aspiring, Aleve, and Advil. Prescription medication also may help relieve symptoms of fibrocystic breasts.
As a girl approaches her teen years, the first visible signs of breast development begin. When the ovaries start to produce and release (secrete) estrogen, fat in the connective tissue starts to collect. This causes the breasts to enlarge. The duct system also starts to grow. Often these breast changes happen at the same that pubic hair and armpit hair appear.
Once ovulation and menstruation begin, the maturing of the breasts begins with the formation of secretory glands at the end of the milk ducts. The breasts and duct system continue to grow and mature, with the development of many glands and lobules. The rate at which breasts grow is different for each young woman.
Each month, women go through changes in the hormones that make up the normal menstrual cycle. The hormone estrogen is produced by the ovaries in the first half of the menstrual cycle. It stimulates the growth of milk ducts in the breasts. The increasing level of estrogen leads to ovulation halfway through the cycle. Next, the hormone progesterone takes over in the second half of the cycle. It stimulates the formation of the milk glands. These hormones are believed to be responsible for the cyclical changes that many women feel in their breasts just before menstruation. These include swelling, pain, and soreness.
During menstruation, many women also have changes in breast texture. Their breasts may feel very lumpy. This is because the glands in the breast are enlarging to get ready for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not happen, the breasts go back to normal size. Once menstruation starts, the cycle begins again.
Many healthcare providers believe the breasts are not fully mature until a woman has given birth and made milk. Breast changes are one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. This is a result of the hormone progesterone. In addition, the dark areas of skin around the nipples (the areolas) begin to swell. This is followed by the rapid swelling of the breasts themselves. Most pregnant women feel soreness down the sides of the breasts, and nipple tingling or soreness. This is because of the growth of the milk duct system and the formation of many more lobules.
By the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, the breasts are fully capable of producing milk. As in puberty, estrogen controls the growth of the ducts, and progesterone controls the growth of the glandular buds. Many other hormones also play vital roles in milk production. These include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, oxytocin, and human placental lactogen (HPL).
Engorged breasts look several sizes bigger than their normal size. Most people will see their veins protruding visibly under the skin of their breasts. The skin of your breasts may appear shiny from being stretched. Your breasts will likely have an uneven shape, and you may see visible lumps or hard spots.
The rise in levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone causes premenstrual breast changes in a woman. Symptoms subside and breasts return to normal with menstruation, when the hormone levels drop.
After the egg is released (ovulation), the ovaries produce progesterone, a hormone that improves blood supply to the breasts, and stimulates the growth of milk glands. Progesterone also thickens the uterus lining for implantation and nurturing of the embryo.
Research indicates that breast tissue gets more fibrous (fibrocystic), denser, and less fatty before periods. Researchers suggest that the accuracy of mammograms can improve if performed in the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle when the breasts are less dense.
An added benefit to timing mammograms in this way is that it may also reduce discomfort or pain for many women because breasts may not feel as tender during the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle. However, some women may still have discomfort during a mammogram.
Though breasts undergo changes before a period, nipples rarely undergo any change. If the nipples get bigger, or the colored area (areola) around the nipple gets dark, it may suggest pregnancy. Any other unusual changes to the nipple must be checked by your doctor.
Breast changes can also occur for reasons other than the menstrual cycle. It may be useful to learn to self-examine your breasts for any abnormal changes and be aware of what is normal for your breasts.
